Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary
Discover the lush green forests and diverse wildlife of Tungareshwar, a protected area near Mumbai that offers a perfect escape into nature with its scenic trails, ancient temples, and rich biodiversity.
Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is a significant natural reserve located on a plateau east of Vasai and Virar in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, approximately 75–80 km north of Mumbai. Officially declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2003, it covers an area of about 85 square kilometers and forms an important ecological corridor between Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary.
This geographical connectivity enables seasonal movement and genetic exchange of wildlife between forest patches, strengthening regional biodiversity and ecological stability. The sanctuary’s terrain is characterised by hilly plateaus, rocky outcrops, and undulating landscapes rising up to approximately 665 meters above sea level, interspersed with streams and seasonal rivulets that support local water systems.
Vegetation in Tungareshwar comprises a diverse mix of dry deciduous, moist deciduous, and semi-evergreen forest types. Dominant plant species include teak, bamboo, mango, along with several medicinal and indigenous plants. This rich floral diversity provides essential habitats for a wide range of wildlife species.
The sanctuary supports various faunal species such as wild boar, barking deer, black-naped hares, bonnet and rhesus macaques, langurs, and occasional leopards. Although apex predators like leopards are present, their population remains relatively low due to limited availability of primary prey species such as spotted deer or sambar deer.
Tungareshwar is particularly notable for its birdlife, making it a rewarding destination for birdwatchers and researchers. Species commonly recorded include the crested serpent-eagle, jungle owlet, white-eyed buzzard, oriental honey-buzzard, emerald dove, and heart-spotted woodpecker. Reptiles, butterflies, and numerous invertebrates further contribute to the sanctuary’s biological richness.
Beyond its ecological importance, Tungareshwar holds cultural and recreational significance due to the presence of the ancient Tungareshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The 3–4 km forest trek leading to the temple is a popular route for pilgrims, trekkers, and nature enthusiasts, especially during festivals such as Maha Shivratri and the Shravan month, offering a serene blend of spirituality and wilderness close to Mumbai.
